What is a Career Development Loan?

A ‘CDL’ is a deferred repayment bank loan to help you pay for vocational learning or education

The Department of Education and Employment (DFEE) pays the interest on your loan while you're learning and you do not have to repay anything until one month after the end of the learning period.
If you finish the course before the intended date you will be required to start repaying the loan one month after.

You then repay the loan to the bank over an agreed period at a very low fixed rate of interest.

CDLs are available through four major banks: Barclays, Clydesdale, The Co-operative and The Royal Bank of Scotland.  You do not need to be an existing account holder but the bank may require you to open an account with them.

How do you apply for a CDL?

To apply for a Career Development Loan you should obtain an application pack and then apply to one of the participating banks.
